About Us

AMURT (Ananda Marga Universal Relief Team) is one of the few voluntary organizations of Third World origin, was established in 1970 and incorporated in Romania in 1990. It is a non-profit NGO – formally recognized as such by the United Nations through its Department of Public Information.

AMURT Romania has developed and managed two big projects: “Domnesti Children’s Home” and “Multifunctional Centre from Domnesti”. The later included two special programs: “Transitional Living” and “Independent Living”, which also included certified vocational cources and vegetable gardening experience.
Other smaller projects were developed as part of the first project: Computer Literacy Center and the buying three apartments in Bucharest. AMURT's present project aims to reduce poverty among Roma and other ethnic groups.

What happened to the abandoned children of Romania (1990) after the media spotlight faded? They are young adults now and many are ill prepared for life outside the care system. Most of the young people living on the streets of Bucharest are from State Children's Homes. At the age of 18, young people have no choice but to leave these institutions without any support. It is at this stage that AMURT Romania intervenes. It is one of only a few NGOs that have taken on this challenging and vulnerable target group. Please visit AMURT fundraising page.
